"Fill a Back Pack, Fill a Need" to Help Kids

SIDNEY - The United Way of Sidney and the United Way of Delaware and Otsego Counties are joining forces to conduct their "Fill a Back Pack, Fill a Need" school supply and kid friendly food drive. Now through Aug. 22, the United Way partners will be seeking donations of backpacks, school supplies and nutritious, kid friendly foods. The drive also needs volunteers to sort and deliver items to the organizations distributing the donations.

Donations can be dropped off at the following locations in Sidney: NBT Bank, Sidney Pennysaver, Video Entertainment Plus and Great American.

For many financially strapped parents, the approach of a new school year puts extra pressure on the family budget. Lower income parents struggle to pay for new clothes and shoes for growing children as well as school supplies, which can cost $20 or $30 for each child. Local food pantries report an increase in usage during this time as parents cut back on food purchases to get their children ready for school. In response to this need, United Way hopes to mobilize the greater Sidney community to donate and volunteer to help local children get ready for a successful school year.

School supply donations will be distributed through the Boys and Girls Club of Sidney.

Kid friendly foods will be given to school nutrition back pack programs and local food pantries.
