In early September 2011, rains from tropical storm Lee caused catastrophic flooding in the village of Sidney and the surrounding area. United Way of Sidney responded immediately, first by approving the expenditure of money from our general fund to help with unmet needs in the local shelters, and secondly by setting up a Flood Relief Fund to receive donations to assist flood victims. Through the generosity of many individuals, businesses, organizations and Sidney Alumni, to date United Way of Sidney has received $22,828.92 for the Flood Relief Fund.
Currently, a Disaster Relief Committee, working with the Village of Sidney, is completing an assessment of the needs of individuals affected by the flooding. The flood relief money will be disbursed through the Sidney Community Foundation (a 501c3 organization) to the individuals selected by the Disaster Relief Committee to help with needs that have not been met through FEMA, insurance or other sources. More information on the dispersal of the flood relief funds will be posted on the website as it becomes available.
